When Can I Claim?

Home » Mortgage Protection » Claiming

Like other protection insurance policies you must be in receipt of Statutory Sick Pay or Short-term Incapacity Benefit in order to claim, (you could still receive benefit if you do not qualify for Income Support or SSP because you have been entitled to make reduced National Insurance Contributions in the past).

Please Note:  If claiming against a Mortgage Payment Protection policy you may only claim for the mortgage repayment amount payable at the point of claim, so long as it is the same or less than the monthly benefit amount applied for on your application form.  If your mortgage payments have increased you will only receive the full amount so long as it is less than 50% of your gross monthly salary (to a maximum monthly benefit of £2,000) and have notified the underwriters and amended your policy accordingly.

If you are still unable to work 30 days following the day your doctor declares you unfit to work you may make a claim and it will be paid Back to Day OneThis means that you can make a claim after just 30 or more consecutive days loss of income through accident, sickness or unemployment and the claim will be backdated to the first day of the 30. You may make multiple claims for the life of the policy.

Claiming for Unemployment:

Back to Day OneThis means that you can make a claim after just 30 or more consecutive days loss of income through accident, sickness or unemployment and the claim will be backdated to the first day of the 30. You may make multiple claims for the life of the policy.

In keeping with other insurance policies, you cannot claim for unemployment for the first 120 days from the start date of the policy - please see Initial exclusion period.

What we will not cover following an increase in monthly benefit:

We will not pay the increase in monthly benefit for any disability claim caused by or resulting from any sickness, condition or injury that you have suffered, whether diagnosed or not about which you knew or should reasonably have known at the date you applied for the increase, or had seen or arranged to see a Doctor during the 12 months prior to the date you applied for the increase.

We will not pay the increase in monthly benefit for any unemployment claim where your employment ends within 120 days of the date you applied for the increase, or you were aware of the possibility of impending unemployment at the date you applied for the increase.
